When, in disgrace with fortune and men's eyes, I all alone beweep my outcast state, And trouble deaf heaven with my bootless cries, And look upon myself, and curse my fate, Wishing me like to one more rich in hope, Featured like him, like him with friends possess'd, Desiring this man's art and that man's scope, With what I most enjoy contented least; Yet in these thoughts myself almost despising, Haply I think on thee, and then my state, Like to the lark at break of day arising From sullen earth, sings hymns at heaven's gate; For thy sweet love remember'd such wealth brings That then I scorn to change my state with kings.
Analysis
The way i interpreted the poem was that even with fortune he still feels like an outcast and that no one else likes him. That he cries out but nobody is listening and then in sadness he looks upon himself and curses his fate. Also while he is looking upon himself he wished that he had more hope. Then in the sentence "featured like him, like him with friends possess'd". he compares himself to a guy who looks better than him and has more friends than him and wishes he was more like him. He then keeps comparing himself wishing he had more skill or physiology . Then thinking about this even more his favorite things start to content him least because what he wants most is to have friends and not be alone. Later he thinks that in his state he can come up from the earth and sing at heavens gate and from sweet love comes great wealth. Then he thinks that he would rather be in this state for the rest of his life than be in the pace of a king. Another thing i noticed from this poem is that it seems like for a while all he could focus on was depression and how lonely he was and the only thing that could cheer him up was being thankful that he was not in the place of kings.
By William shakespeare
When, in disgrace with fortune and men's eyes,
I all alone beweep my outcast state,
And trouble deaf heaven with my bootless cries,
And look upon myself, and curse my fate,
Wishing me like to one more rich in hope,
Featured like him, like him with friends possess'd,
Desiring this man's art and that man's scope,
With what I most enjoy contented least;
Yet in these thoughts myself almost despising,
Haply I think on thee, and then my state,
Like to the lark at break of day arising
From sullen earth, sings hymns at heaven's gate;
For thy sweet love remember'd such wealth brings
That then I scorn to change my state with kings.
